Synopsis:

Bushi no Ichibun is the third installment in Yoichi Yamada’s (“Tasogare Seibei” & “Kakushi-ken Oni no Tsume”) samurai-trilogy. It tells the story of love and sword-drawn vengeance. It is said, that Yamada’s newest film is also his top masterpiece in this trilogy.

Shinnojo (Takuya Kimura), a low-ranked samurai and his wife Kayo (Rei Dan) have a happy life, and his career prospects as an expert swordsman are bright until suddenly it all goes crash. However, the fact is that Shinnojo is unable to work in the castle any longer. Kayo is told to approach the domain's Head clerk, Toya Shimada (Mitsugoro Bando), and ask him to use his good offices in having Shinnojo's stipend maintained. In return, he has demanded her body. Kayo and the couple's elderly servant Tokuhei (Takashi Sasano) remain devoted, but Shinnojo feels worse than useless. He contemplates suicide, and turns bitter and violent. Out of anger and despair, Shinnojo divorces her. Eventually Shinnojo learns the truth. Shimada merely took his pleasure with Kayo; not one word did he say about how Shinnojo was to be treated to the Lord. Meanwhile, Shinnojo's relatives, beginning with his aunt Ine (Kaori Momoi), are selfish, coldly practical sorts who, at a family conference, tell Kayo to find a powerful patron. She remembers Toya Shimada (played by Mitsugoro Bando), a clan banto (captain) who had once expressed sympathy for her plight.
Shinnojo can’t stand it any longer and he challenges Shimado to a duel…
